West Ham re-sign Alex Song on season-long loan from Barcelona

West Ham United have re-signed the Barcelona midfielder Alex Song on a season-long loan, with an option to retain the Cameroonian for a further year, and hope to add up to three more players before Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

The Hull City striker Nikica Jelavic, 30, underwent a medical at the London club on Monday after the clubs agreed a £3m deal. The Croatia international, who cost Hull £6.5m in January 2014 but was earning around £30,000 a week in the second tier after the club’s relegation, will be reunited with his former national team manager, Slaven Bilic, at Upton Park. The former Rangers and Everton forward was targeted after West Ham opted against pursuing a move for Tottenham Hotspur’s out-of-favour forward, Emmanuel Adebayor.

Talks are continuing, too, with Nottingham Forest over their goalscoring winger Michail Antonio, who may end up costing around £7m. An initial bid for the 25-year-old, of £5m plus Matt Jarvis on a season-long loan, had been rejected last week prompting the Forest manager, Dougie Freedman, to withdraw the player from the squad for a game against Charlton suggesting he was not in the right frame of mind to play.

Yet Antonio, who contributed 15 goals last season, returned to score his fourth of the campaign to date with the team’s consolation in Saturday’s 2-1 reverse to Cardiff at the City Ground and, having made clear his desire to transfer to the Premier League, is now expected to complete the move with discussions reopened between the club and an improved offer on the table. West Bromwich Albion and Derby County had bid for his services in the summer but the sale should ensure Forest’s transfer embargo, imposed for breaches of financial fair play regulations, is lifted by the Football League next summer.

West Ham also hope to secure Victor Moses, who is due to sign an extension to his contract at Chelsea, on a season-long loan from the champions but face competition from Spurs and West Brom. They have already secured Song on such an arrangement from Barcelona. The 27-year-old played 31 times for Sam Allardyce’s team last year and the Catalans had been willing to grant him a free transfer having touted him to both Spurs and Chelsea earlier in the summer.

Yet West Ham’s interest has been constant and, with the player currently suffering from an ankle injury which will sideline him until mid-October, they have secured him on loan with an option for a further season.
