Why is David de Gea transfer from Manchester United to Real Madrid in danger of collapse?

Manchester United goalkeeper's switch to Spanish giants has stalled. Telegraph Sport explains why and what happens next

So what happened then, why hasn't De Gea joined Real?

The Spaniard's move descended into farce on Monday night as the necessary paperwork did not arrive in time to sign off the switch.

So the move can just be completed today as the window is still open?

Wrong. The European football window closed at midnight last night which means that any transfers between the Premier League and clubs across Europe are done, over, finito. The Premier League window closes today at 6pm which means players between English clubs - and Scotland (whose window closes at midnight tonight) can still take place.

But De Gea's move looked a shoo-in earlier in the day?

That's true. Negotiations began at the start of the day and a £29m move plus Keylor Navas moving to Old Trafford in part exchange had been agreed.

So what proved to be the hold-up?

Real are blaming United. They say they did not receive the necessary paperwork until 12.01am. Old Trafford officials have dimissed some claims. They are adamant they played ball and have even time-stamped documents to the Fifa transfer matching system to prove their compliance with regulations.

What happens now?

Real are expected to submit an appeal to Fifa today with evidence to show that paperwork from both ends of the deal arrived in time and was simply delayed by the differencing computer software used by the two clubs and the volume of papers being received by La Liga.

Why can't an extension just be granted?

United were given more time to sign Radamel Falcao on loan from Monaco on deadline day in the summer window last year but it's understood there is no such facility for an extension in Spain.

But it's United and Real Madrid, surely a deal can be passed?

It doesn't matter who you are. United fell foul of the more stringent Spanish regulations two years ago, when a loan move for Real defender Fabio Coentrao collapsed due to a failure to register the deal in time.

Where has De Gea been while this episode has played out?

The Spaniard has been waiting at the Madrid home of his popstar girlfriend, Edurne Garcia Almagro and was said to be 'distraught' when news filtered through that the paperwork didn't come through in time.
