Barcelona pulled out of running for Manchester United's Paul Pogba due to Juventus' huge £100m fee

Barcelona's director of football has revealed the Catalan club ruled themselves out of the race for Paul Pogba due to his enormous asking price.

The Spanish champions had been linked with Pogba over the last year but Ariedo Braida opted for Andre Gomes after being put off by the price tag, which saw him join Manchester United for £100million.

Braida told La Gazzetta dello Sport: 'Barcelona pulled out of the race to sign Pogba for economic reasons.'

He added that the risk of such a high-profile, expensive transfer was the scrutiny Pogba will find himself under.

'There is no discussion about his qualities and I think he will assert himself at Manchester United, but there will be criticism each time he is not at his best.

'People will see the transfer fee and expect him to win games on his own and this is simply not possible.'

Pogba could make his debut at the smallest ground in the Premier League at Bournemouth

POGBA'S WORLD RECORD TRANSFER

Initial fee: £89.5m

Final total: £100m

Weekly wage: £290,000

Monthly wage: £1,160,000

Annual salary: £15,080,000

Braida also noted his personal feeling of unease regarding such gigantic sums of money in comparison with how most people live.

'Some figures are upsetting. No one is worth that kind of money. When you get to a certain level, we are getting too detached from normal life. We are talking about an operation of €150million if we include wages.'

The Barcelona chief concluded by speculating over how the Frenchman might react to being so exposed by the spotlight of his move.

'You never know how a player will react to being overpriced like that. Maybe it will not even influence him, but the pressure must be enormous.'

The last match Pogba played was for France in the final of Euro 2016 but his Manchester United debut might come in the more low-key surroundings of Bournemouth's Vitality Stadium.

The 23-year-old could feature in front of 11,464 fans if Mourinho selects him, but the eyes of the world will be watching with keen interest after the most talked about transfer of the summer takes centre stage.
