£10m would be enough to seal the deal for Arsenal if they wanted to steal a march, but is Fonte a long-term proposition for a club famously unaccommodating to their over-30s? Similarly, after securing the likes of Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, is Fonte really of sufficient stature for United?
After all, Jose Mourinho is not in the habit of signing sub-standard centre-backs just for the sake of it.

Gabriel Barbosa Almeida - also known by the sillier name of Gabigol - has been turning heads for Brazil at the Olympics (in the football, obviously, not judo or dressage) and that's bad news for Leicester City, who are going to be gazumped by Jose Mourinho in their bid for "the new Neymar".

After stating that he was "flattered" by Manchester United's interest in him, reports are circulating that the Southampton captain Jose Fontenow wants to leave the south coast club.
According to Duncan Castles of the Times, Fonte is eager for his current club to honour the "gentleman's agreement" that was put in place when he signed a new three-year deal last season which reportedly states that 'the club will not stand in his way should he get a better offer from elsewhere.'

Mourinho's first choice, however, is thought to be Raphael Varane of Real Madrid - but any fee is likely to be prohibitive.
Meanwhile, Matteo Darmian's ommission from United's matchday squad against Bournemouth fuelled speculation about his future at Old Trafford, with Calciomercato believing that he may have played his last game at the club.
CREDIT: REXAntonio Valencia appears to be Jose Mourinho's preferred choice at right back, having featured in both the Community Shield and yesterday's clash on the south coast.
The Italian outlet have linked Darmain - who only signed from Torino last summer - with a move back to Serie A, with both Napoli and Roma emerging as the front runners to secure his signature.
