It's hard to imagine a world without the concept of taking a selfie

Can you imagine life without selfies? That is the question that fired people's imaginations on Twitter as thousands of users pondered the reality of life without a forward-facing camera.
It's hard to imagine a world where the concept of taking a selfie, a word which gained international acclaim when it was named the Oxford Dictionaries' word of the year in 2013, doesn't exist.

Yet the hashtag #IfSelfiesNeverExisted trended on social media as people posted their own thoughts on the matter which ranged from the philosophical to the hilarious.

Some social media users that participated in the hashtag expressed that a selfie-less world would be a better place.

'Duck faces would still be where they belong... on ducks', wrote Thomas Jones.

For some Twitter users, the hashtag even sparked an existential crisis.

'This tag would have never existed but now it does so I'm having an existential crisis', wrote Portmanteau Jones.

Joe Fattorini, presenter of ITV's The Wine Show, joined in on the fun, sharing a collection of nine silly selfies with the caption: 'I would have fewer uses for my hat collection'.

'A photo of yourself would still be called a self-portrait, and langugae wouldn't have to cry itself to sleep', wrote NotJoeNamath.

However, others suggested that selfies are an improvement to society - and mourned the potential loss of them.

'We'd miss out on so many beautiful faces' wrote Laurie Crosswell. And Seth Goodtime added: 'I wouldn't be quite sure which was to part my hair.'

Sugarscape shared a rather smouldering selfie taken by One Direction's Niall Horan, with the caption: 'We wouldn't have been blessed with this so honestly what would be the point?'.

And Twitter user Soph had a similar opinion. She shared a photo of a freshly-shaved man holding a Hungarian vizla dog, with the caption: 'We wouldn't have this masterpiece'.

Others pondered on what a selfie-less world would mean for social media.

'Instagram would probably be the name of a popular drug dealing service,' wrote one tweeter. 'Facebook would be a blank page,' commented another.

Jen Farrow wrote: 'The world wouldn't see so many bathrooms through mirror reflections'.

And Daniel Pearson had a harsh truth: 'There's be a LOT of Instagram fitness models working at Starbucks to make ends meet' - his tweet receiving nearly 500 likes.

A couple of responses to the hashtag were particularly eye-opening.

'We'd focus less on how we look and concentrate more on what we're actually like', wrote one tweeter.

'People would actually enjoy time with family and friends', added another.
