'We're asking cops to do too much in this country': Dallas police chief

Dallas police chief David Brown called on black protesters to become part of the solution and become a cop in the wake of the mass shooting

Brown said he was 'running on fumes' after five officers were shot dead

'We are all worried for our safety' he said at a Monday press conference

He also warned police were being asked to deal with 'every societal failure'

Dallas police chief David Brown has warned that cops cannot cope with 'every societal failure' as he calls on more young black men to become officers in the wake of last week's mass shooting.

Speaking just days after gunman Micah Johnson killed five of his men at a peaceful protest, injuring seven others, Brown has appealed for young black protesters to become 'part of the solution.'

'We're hiring,' he said at a press conference on Monday. Get off that protest line and put an application in. And we'll put you in your neighborhood, and we'll help you resolve some of the problems you're protesting about.'

The protests were sparked by the deaths of two black men, Philando Castile and Alton Sterling, who were shot dead by cops last week.

Brown acknowledges the strength of feeling after the fatal shootings but urged people to do something positive rather than take to the streets to demonstrate.

'I probably wouldn't protest or complain I would get involved and do something about it,' he said.

The police chief, who said that he and his family has received death threats almost immediately after the atrocity, admitted he was 'running on fumes'.

'We are all worried for our safety. We are all on edge and being very careful.'
