Court halts PDP National Convention

Ahmed Makarfi, who is the Chairman of PDP’s national caretaker committee has urged factional chairman Ali Modu Sheriff, to end leadership tussle

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled in favour Factional Chairman of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, Ali Modu-Sheriff ordering the Chairman of the Party’s Caretaker Committee, Ahmed Markafi to stop the party’s national convention scheduled for August 17.

Sheriff in his suit, was seeking an interlocutory injunction restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the party from conducting the new national convention

In his ruling, the judge ordered that Sheriff be recognized as the authentic chairman of PDP

He said the caretaker committee was “illegal” based on the Ikeja division of the federal high court and cannot take decisions on behalf of the PDP.

The PDP is Nigeria’s biggest opposition party, and was defeated only in May 2015 after holding power for 16 years.

However it has been enmeshed in a series of leadership crises, which culminated in two parallel conventions in Abuja and Port Harcourt.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has approved the Markafi led committee as the party’s legal representatives.
