FIFA council member Niersbach appeals football ban
FIFA’s ethics committee on Monday banned Niersbach, who is also a member of the UEFA executive committee, in connection with the awarding of the 2006 World Cup to Germany
Former German Football Federation President and FIFA council member, Wolfgang Niersbach, is to appeal his one-year ban from football.
Niersbach said this on Wednesday.
He said: “After consulting with my lawyers, I will lodge an appeal, if only to obtain the written reasons for the judgment.
“I can only repeat that I consider the judgment to be excessive and I therefore feel obliged to act against it.”
FIFA’s ethics committee on Monday banned Niersbach, who is also a member of the UEFA executive committee, in connection with the awarding of the 2006 World Cup to Germany.
FIFA said its adjudicatory chamber found Niersbach failed to report findings about possible misconduct concerning the awarding of the 2006 World Cup, including potential breaches of the FIFA Code of Ethics.
Meanwhile, Niersbach resigned as DFB president on November 9, 2015.
He said he took responsibility for the World Cup affair surrounding a payment made by Germany’s 2006 World Cup organising committee, under its President, Franz Beckenbauer, of 6.7 million Euros ($7.4 million) to FIFA.
However, the adjudicatory chamber could also attempt to appeal the length of the ban having demanded a two-year suspension.
