Plateau killings: Calm in Bokkos as government imposes 24-hour curfew

Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State

Relative calm has returned to the troubled Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau after a 24-hour curfew by the state security council.

Mr Tyopev Tema, the Plateau Police Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bokkos on Friday.

NAN reports that the curfew had been so effective that all the roads and streets within the council were virtually empty safe for security agents parading and keeping the peace of the area.

The PPRO said that calm had returned to virtually every nook and cranny of the area.

“As we speak, there is relative calm across the council with our men keeping vigil and monitoring the situation around to forestall any further breakdown of law and order.

“We have already commenced full investigations into the killings with DIG Joshalk Habilla leading the team to find the killers, ’’ the PPRO said,

Tema said that beside Jwanshack who is an indigene of Plateau, the Pilot of the Commissioner of Police Helicopter, Mr E.D. Izang, is also another indigene who knows the terrain of the council for effective investigation.

He said that two of the wounded persons during last Thursday’s clash between protesting youths and security operatives have been treated and discharged from the Plateau Specialist Hospital, Jos.

One Pharmacist Matawal and Dr Geoffrey Kumven, who helped in treating some of the wounded persons in Bokkos before their transfer to Plateau Specialist Hospital told NAN that 10 people were injured during the fracas.

The spokesman of Joint Task Force (JTF), Capt Ikedichi Iweha, expressed happiness over the success of the curfew in calming down tension in Bokkos.

Iweha said that full investigation has commenced to unravel those behind the killing of the paramount ruler of Bokkos and three others on Monday July 18.

He said the security operatives would not be distracted from its constitutional role of defending innocent Nigerians from bad elements and enemies within and without.

The JTF spokesman appealed for 100 per cent cooperation and support from the indigenes of Bokkos toward efforts at getting at the killers.
